REVIEW: Cigarettes After Sex – ‘Cigarettes After Sex’ (Partisan Records)

Much of the hype leading up to ‘Cigarettes After Sex’ originated from the maturity shown in the group’s writing, though little of that is evidenced here.

REVIEW: Phoenix – ‘Ti Amo’ (Glassnote Records)

The problem for Phoenix is that many believe they have already released their masterpiece in 2009 hit record ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’. While ‘Ti Amo’ hints that the French four-piece can reach these heights again, the reality is they may very well not.

REVIEW: !!! – ‘Shake The Shudder’ (Warp Records)

!!!’s seventh studio album feels very slightly tired and old-fashioned, despite the kind of indie-dance floor fillers they’ve been turning out for over 15 years now.

REVIEW: Ho99o9 – ‘United States Of Horror’ (Toys Have Powers)

The idea that a debut album should represent the sound of a band is one which remains true 99% of the time, however, during ‘United States of Horror’s 40+ minutes, the only notion of clarity we get is that Ho99o9 are as uncommitted to one sound as they are committed to challenging the listener.

REVIEW: Perfume Genius – ‘No Shape’ (Matador Records)

No Shape is a delightful record, built on superb lyricism and ably assisted by some excellent instrumentation.

REVIEW: Adore//Repel – ‘Empty Orchestra’ (Shoveitupyourcult Records)

Adore//Repel’s debut album ‘Empty Orchestra’ hints a lot but delivers disappointingly little. One for the future.
