Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

PREVIEW: Gigs of the Week in Leeds, 6th-12th October

The Coral @ Leeds Beckett University, Saturday 6th October

The Coral emerged in the early 2000s and since then have been successfully delivering timeless indie-rock anthems to fans in England and beyond. The Liverpool-based quintet has been one of the most consistent English rock bands of the past two decades, always making time to experiments with their sound while constantly adding new records to their discography. Recently, The Coral released their ninth studio album Move Through The Dawn, the first one after a five-year hiatus. The fresh release has called for a set of new live gigs, including one at Leeds Beckett University this Saturday.

The Academic @ The Wardrobe, Wednesday 10th October

The Academic formed in a small town of Mullingar, just outside of Dublin and just recently released their debut album Tales From The Backseat. Although they are very young and very new to the music scene, they have already supported the likes of Pixies and Noel Gallagher. The Academic draw their inspiration mainly from indie-pop bands, such as Kings of Leon or The Kooks, but also post-punk artists, such as The Strokes and Interpol. Over the past couple of years, they have toured all around Ireland and the UK, building an audience and proving that they indeed are one of the most exciting new bands. The Academic are playing the Wardrobe this Wednesday, be sure not to miss them!

Maribou State @ Brudenell Social Club, Friday 12th October

Maribou State is an electronic music band formed by Chris Davids and Liam Ivory in 2011. The duo comes from London and makes music that is most often described as “mesmerising.” So far, Maribou State have released two albums, the insanely popular Portraits from 2015 and a great follow up to it, Kingdoms In Colour from just a few weeks back. Currently, the band is the middle of a world tour, celebrating the release of their latest record. Travelling across the continents, from Amsterdam to Seattle in the US, they also found time for a very special gig at our very own Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, where they will play on this Friday night.
