Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

PREVIEW: Gigs of the Week in Leeds, 19th-25th October

Frankie Cosmos @ Belgrave Music Hall, Saturday 19th October

Four albums by the age of 25 would be impressive enough, until you dig deeper into Greta Kline’s career and discover her huge archive of lo-fi Bandcamp releases under various monikers that go all the way back to 2009 and then realise you’re dealing with an unbelievably prolific artist. Dealing in small but perfectly formed song sketches and performing under the name of Frankie Cosmos, Kline genuinely deserves all those well-worn ‘voice of her generation’ clichés that are all too often bandied around without justification to describe common-or-garden songwriters. Last year’s Vesselwas one of the most affecting and moving records of the decade, eliciting that unrepeatable feeling of excitement and dread as you find your way in the world as a young adult. Currently touring her new album Close It Quietly, Kline comes to Leeds and the Belgrave Music Hall on Saturday night. (TICKETS)

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard @ O2 Academy Leeds, Sunday 20th October

A postponed and rearranged gig from a couple of weeks back, the insanely prolific King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard come to Leeds on their current tour that sees them filling out the biggest venues of their career. Stu Mackenzie and crew have already released two albums in 2019, the innocent psychedelia of Fishing For Fishies contrasting with the metallic heaviness of the most recent, Infest The Rat’s Nest.

The Twilight Sad @ Brudenell Social Club, Tuesday 22nd October

Having built up an imperious live reputation for fearsomely loud and cathartic soul-bearing over the last ten years, one which their consistently great records have never truly been able to capture, The Twilight Sad are bigger now than they’ve ever been. That’s partly because of the conspicuous patronage of a certain Robert Smith, but January 2019 also saw them release their finest and best-selling album to date, It Won/t Be Like This All The Time. Their current UK tour comes to the Brudenell Social Club, and it represents probably the last chance to see this group in such an intimate environment. (TICKETS)

HÆLOS @ The Wardrobe, Thursday 24th October

London-based HÆLOS come to the Wardrobe on Thursday this week as their current UK tour hits Leeds. Their 2016 debut album Full Circle received the plaudits, who rightly admired the chilled out mixture of ambient psychedelia and relaxed trip-hop, but their equally impressive second record Any Human Kindness has fallen somewhat underneath the radar. Everyone else’s loss can be your gain! (TICKETS)
