PREVIEW: Gigs of the Week in Leeds, August 3rd-9th

Flipper @ Brudenell Social Club, Saturday 3rd August

A tour to mark the 40th anniversary of the seminal and often entertainingly shambolic San Franciscan band Flipper comes to the Brudenell Social Club. Having formed in 1979, Flipper are often considered progenitors of the kind of sound popularised by Nirvana in the Nineties – indeed, Nirvana’s bassist Krist Novoselic briefly played with them during the Noughties, and Kurt Cobain can be seen wearing one of the band’s T-shirts in the liner notes of In Utero. A unique opportunity to see an incredibly influential band in the flesh. (TICKETS)

Durand Jones & The Indications @ Brudenell Social Club, Monday 5th August

Having released their sophomore studio album American Love Call around six months ago, Durand Jones & The Indications arrive in Leeds on their exhaustive accompanying world tour. With politically and socially aware lyrics meeting soulful, passionate and orchestrated funk and R&B, Jones is a master at striking up that retro Seventies soul feel – think Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, The Impressions, etc. Very few tickets are left, but if you’re quick you might get lucky! (TICKETS)

Flooded @ Hyde Park Book Club, Tuesday 6th August

Having created quite a buzz in their native York with a period of pretty relentless gigging over the last couple of years, newcomers Flooded embark on their first British headline tour in August. With debut single ‘Too Much For Lucy’ and new track ‘Alligator’ under their belts, they’ve been drawing comparisons with early Kaiser Chiefs. Check them out at Hyde Park Book Club when they come to Leeds on Tuesday! (TICKETS)

Dry Cleaning @ Brudenell Social Club, Friday 9th August

London-based post-punk influenced newbies Dry Cleaning undertake a short tour of the UK this month, one that will also call in on the Green Man festival in the Brecon Beacons. They arrive in Leeds to play the Brudenell just in time to kick off the weekend. Infectious and hectoring single ‘Magic Of Meghan’ has deservedly caught the ears of several indie publications over the last month, and their six-track debut EP Sweet Princess is out the following Friday (16th August). (TICKETS)
