Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

PREVIEW: Gigs of the Week in Leeds, 21st-27th September

Khalid @ First Direct Arena, Sunday 22nd September

With a chart-topping album, a clutch of Top Ten hits and five Grammy nominations already under his belt by the age of 21 in his homeland, American singer Khalid brings his latest European tour through Leeds to round off the weekend. Possessing a two-octave vocal range, his stripped-back style appeals to hip-hop and indie fans alike, and the First Direct Arena is now the only venue in the city big enough to hold him! (TICKETS)

Spiral Stairs @ Hyde Park Book Club, Monday 23rd September

Known professionally as Spiral Stairs and a former member of the beyond-legendary Pavement, Scott Kannberg is an important figure in the history of American indie. Touring his recently released solo album We Wanna Be Hyp-No-Tized, Kannberg comes to the Hyde Park Book Club on Monday evening, in what is a perfect meeting of artist and venue. (TICKETS)

Marika Hackman @ Brudenell Social Club, Tuesday 24th September

A month after the release of her excellent third album Any Human Friend, the incomparable Marika Hackman brings her UK tour to the Brudenell Social Club. Her live shows have always served to magnify and concentrate the themes from whatever album she’s promoting at the time, so this time around, you can expect an intimate and disarming performance. Tickets still available for one of Britain’s best female live performers! (TICKETS)

Submotion Orchestra @ The Wardrobe, Wednesday 25th September

It’s sure to be a great homecoming for Leeds cult heroes Submotion Orchestra, who play at The Wardrobe on Wednesday night. Since they formed a decade ago, the band’s brew of dubstep, soul, jazz and electronica has taken them to festivals across the continent over the course of five albums, the most recent being last year’s Kites. (TICKETS)

Allah-Las @ Brudenell Social Club, Friday 27th September

There’s just a minute amount of tickets left for Los Angeles’ psychedelic rockers Allah-Las when they come to the Brudenell Social Club in time for the weekend. Currently preparing for the imminent release of their fourth studio album LAHS, out in mid-October, the quartet’s spellbinding live shows ought to bring the new material to life. (TICKETS)
