Indie Banquet XIV @ Hyde Park Book Club, Saturday 17th August
There’s other things than just Ed Sheeran at Roundhay going on in Leeds this weekend! Founded in 2016, Pizza For The People’s Indie Banquets are a great meeting of delicious vegetarian and vegan food combined with exciting new live music. Hyde Park Book Club plays host to the 14th instalment this Saturday, and the line-up is topped by South-London punks Talk Show, who’ve recently enjoyed the endorsement of The Maccabees’ former singer Felix White. Performing alongside them are psych-rockers Egyptian Blue, Leeds’ own L.D. Moses and The Shakamoto Investigation plus Hull-based quartet Autosuggestion. (TICKETS)
Sharon Van Etten @ LUU Stylus, Monday 19th August
Having commenced an acting career and welcoming her first child in the interim, the wonderful Sharon Van Etten made her comeback after nearly five years back in January with her latest album Remind Me Tomorrow. Dipping her toes into synthesiser-based territory for the first time, it was a noticeably different-sounding affair, but it retained all the qualities that made her so compelling. Her live shows have always been spellbinding, and there are limited tickets left for her show at Leeds Stylus on Monday. Hurry up! (TICKETS)
Elephant Gym @ Headrow House, Tuesday 20th August
Taiwanese math-rock band Elephant Gym come through Leeds on Tuesday night. Headrow House plays host to their unforgettable sound – according to their mythology, the ‘Elephant’ symbolises their bass-led melodies, while the ‘Gym’ refers to their nimble rhythmical sense. They’re supporting last year’s second album Underwater, and for £11, this represents a spectacular bargain! (TICKETS)
White Fence @ Brudenell Social Club, Tuesday 20th August
Garage / psychedelic rocker Tim Presley – formerly of Darker My Love and, at one fleeting point, The Fall, plus a sometime collaborator with Cate Le Bon and Ty Segall – brings his White Fence project to the Brudenell Social Club on Tuesday evening. Currently touring 2019’s album I Have To Feed Larry’s Hawk, Presley’s idiosyncratic sound is something to behold in the live arena. (TICKETS)
Madlib @ Belgrave Music Hall, Friday 23rd August
One of the most prolific and consistent hip-hop producers since the turn of the millennium, and hot off the back of Bandana, his second collaboration with rapper Freddie Gibbs, the legendary Madlib kicks off the Bank Holiday weekend. It’s part of the World Island series and is mysteriously billed as ‘featuring guests’ – who knows what this opportunity might throw up! (TICKETS)
