Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

PREVIEW: Gigs of the Week in Leeds, February 24th-March 2nd

Only one more week until spring is officially here guys! Don’t know about you, but all the talk of festival line-ups is making us feel warmer already. While we shiver away the last few days of winter, here’s three great gigs you can attend in Leeds this week!

Morrissey @ First Direct Arena, Saturday 24th February

Steven Patrick Morrissey has been a controversial figure these last few years, to say the least, and it’s become increasingly difficult to pass off his more tin-foil-hatted witterings as if he’s some pissed uncle at a wedding. Make what you will of his often ill-judged political statements: nevertheless, this is a chance to see a bona-fide music legend in the flesh. The former Smiths singer’s tour behind his latest solo album Low In High School reaches Leeds and the First Direct Arena. Oh, and also, if you don’t like vegan food, eat before you go…

Pale Waves @ Church, Wednesday 28th February

Forming touring buddies with their Dirty Hit labelmates The 1975, Manchester’s Pale Waves have been on the radar for some time now, but last month the indie-pop quartet finished fifth on the BBC’s Annual Sound Of… poll for 2018. Their latest UK tour is in support of their new EP All The Things I Never Said, which was released just a few days ago, collecting some of their previously released singles on top of some new material. With the promise of a debut album coming later in 2018, the renovated Church venue near Leeds Uni might be the last chance to see them in such an intimate place.

Catholic Action @ Oporto, Wednesday 28th February

If Pale Waves aren’t your thing, then on the more traditional rock’n’roll side of things are Catholic Action, also playing on Wednesday on the other side of town in Oporto on Call Lane. With a well-received debut album In Memory Of… under their belts at the end of last year, such a cramped venue seems a little harsh on a band with a dedicated following and certainly not short on chops in the live arena.
