Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

PREVIEW: Gigs of the Week, August 10th-16th

Cultdreams @ Headrow House, Tuesday 13th August

Self-identifying as “sad lo-fi punks” and formerly known as Kamikaze Girls until earlier this year, Brighton’s Cultdreams are building up to the release next Friday of their sophomore album Big Scary Monsters with a short jaunt around the UK. On Tuesday night, they rock up in Leeds at Headrow House. They’re a terrific and intense live draw – grab your tickets while you can! (TICKETS)

Battles @ Brudenell Social Club, Wednesday 14th August

Originally a quartet when they started back in the mid-Noughties, experimental rock enthusiasts Battles are now reduced to a two-piece of drummer John Stanier and guitarist-keyboardist Ian Williams. Having just last week announced their fourth studio album Juice B Crypts, out in October, it’s a great time to check out some new material from this wildly unpredictable group that have made some of the freakiest robot grooves in recent memory. They’re at the Brudenell Social Club on Wednesday night! (TICKETS)

Yo La Tengo @ Brudenell Social Club, Wednesday 14th August

Where to even begin with Yo La Tengo? With a vastly creative back catalogue that stretches back to 1986 and shows no signs of petering out even halfway through their fourth decade as a band, the word ‘legendary’ doesn’t even begin to describe Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley’s contribution to alternative rock and indie. Reviving their popular ‘Freewheeling’ series of gigs, combining intimate performances of rare and career-spanning material with an interactive Q&A set-up with the audience, this gig sold out extremely quickly. But maybe you know somebody with a spare – this is a unique chance to see one of America’s finest indie bands in the flesh! (TICKETS)

Punk Special x The 360 Club @ The Lending Room, Friday 16th August

The regular 360 Club night above the Library Pub out in Hyde Park convenes for a special edition. Marking the release of the new single from Leeds band Uncomely, there will also be performances from other local acts The Idol Dead, The World Keeps and Stoborough Green. (TICKETS)
