The Student Playlist

Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

PLAYLIST: June 2018

June means that it’s officially summer for students! Unless you’re doing a Masters – in which case commiseration, keep on going!

There’s been no Glastonbury Festival in 2018, but for football fans this year has brought its own kind of festival, as June of course has meant the start of the World Cup – you can enjoy our playlist soundtrack for the football here as we nervously await at which precise point England’s campaign will implode.

June has also brought a veritable welter of new album announcements for 2018. Meek Mill, released from prison just a few months ago, released his first new music in ‘Stay Woke’. The new Death Grips album Year Of The Snitch finally dropped after months of teasing and was awarded Best New Music. The Bodega album, promising to be one of the best guitar debuts of the year, has frustratingly been put back to July, while Leeds’ own Menace Beach are releasing their latest album in the coming months.

There’s also been new album announcements from everyone’s favourite new punk band Idles, while established punk act Slaves teased some new music from a prospective third album. There’s also been announcements and teases from New York post-punkers Interpol, divisive British indie-popsters The 1975, and doe-eyed American indie legends Death Cab For Cutie. Britpop heroes Suede will also be rounding off an apparent trilogy of comeback records with The Blue Hour in September.

Finally, there’s been a couple of long-awaited and hugely welcome returns, with a new Anna Calvi album for the first time in half a decade coming by the end of 2018, and the first new Spiritualized album in six years. As if that wasn’t enough, Nile Rodgers revealed his iconic band Chic will be releasing their first album in more than a quarter of a century – their previous record came out in 1992!

Whatever you’ve been doing during the glorious heat-wave of the last week – travelling, seeing your friends or sitting around in dusty libraries – please check out our playlist of all the best new music that arrived during June 2018!

Happy listening!
