The Student Playlist

Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

PREVIEW: Gigs of the Week in Leeds, May 19th-May 25th

Børns @ The Wardrobe, Saturday 19th May

Børns is an American singer-songwriter, whose danceable, electro-pop tunes are a definition of catchy music. The irresistible blend of pop, rock and funk which Garrett Borns produces is one not to be missed if you’re low on energy, or simply looking for something to move your feet to. Hit single ‘Electric Love’ flew to the top of the charts in 2015 and is a great introduction to the artist’s eccentric and playful music, just perfect for a Saturday night at the Wardrobe.

Japanese Breakfast @ Belgrave Music Hall, Wednesday 23rd May

Michelle Zauner, who might be known to some from her previous band Little Big League, is bringing her new, indie-pop project Japanese Breakfast to Belgrave Music Hall. If you’re looking for a more intimate night, with melodic, synth-boosted sounds, Zauner should be just the right person to deliver that for you. The emotionally charged music of the Philadelphia-based artist has been met with universal acclaim, while her live performances are known to be engaging and charming at the same time.

Sampha @ World Islands, Friday 25th May

Sampha, the author behind The Student Playlist’s top-ranked album of 2017, will perform his cathartic music headlining the World Islands festival to kick off the Bank Holiday weekend. Process, his debut record, introduced a truly exceptional musician to the world, whose emotive and personal approach to music quickly gathered a lot of followers and got the full attention of critics. Sampha’s music speaks for itself, as the artist’s profile lies nowhere near being a celebrity. Yet, his presence on stage is in huge demand, showcasing a man who can change from vulnerable to confident in a matter of minutes, pleasing the audience with his iconic, breathy voice.
