Tinariwen @ Belgrave Music Hall, Saturday 13th July
With their eighth studio album Amajdar out in a couple of months’ time, Grammy-winning Tuareg musical collective Tinariwen hit the Belgrave Music Hall as part of Leeds’ ‘World Island Presents’ summer series this weekend. Melding non-Western styles with some traditional rock dynamics, the band are some of the most mesmerisingly talented musicians about. (TICKETS)
Garbage @ O2 Academy Leeds, Monday 15th July
With a powerful comeback album under their belts in the shape of 2016’s Strange Little Birds and a re-issue series that recently took in a 20th anniversary edition of 1998’s hit-packed Version 2.0, Garbage’s current UK tour swings into Leeds on Monday night. With brutal pop-rock riffs and juddering, precise percussion, they’re spearheaded by take-no-prisoners frontwoman Shirley Manson who invariably turns in magnetic live performances. (TICKETS)
The Bug @ Belgrave Music Hall, Thursday 18th July
Originally from London but now based in Berlin, electronica artist Kevin Martin, a.k.a. The Bug, has variously dabbled in dub, jazzcore, hip-hop, dancehall, and dubstep over the years, finding homes variously on Ninja Tune, Hyperdub and Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label. With singer Miss Red in tow, he hits the Belgrave Music Hall this week. (TICKETS)
Shonen Knife @ Brudenell Social Club, Friday 19th July
Now approaching their 40th anniversary as a band, the legendary Shonen Knife come to the Brudenell Social Club in time to kick off the weekend in style. With big-name patrons over the decades, in the form of Kurt Cobain and Sonic Youth to name but a few, the Japanese pop-punk trio are cult heroes to many. Despite their melodic pop tendencies, evidenced by Beach Boys and Spectorian girl-group influences, they’ve always expressed themselves through DIY aesthetics and with a distinctly underground attitude. Now on their 21st studio album Sweet Candy Power, this is a great chance to see icons in action! (TICKETS)
