Previously writing and performing as Columbus, Ohio-based trio All Dogs are this week’s release which has gone quietly under the radar, but one that comes highly recommended. Their first full full-length record Kicking Every Day is a colourful blend of power pop and early ‘90s American noise pop – think along the lines of The Breeders and Veruca Salt. Having recently caught the eye of Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield, All Dogs’ debut release has arrived in the UK come on the back of positive reviews and it deserves credit.

‘Black Hole’ gives the listener an introduction to the distinctive vocals of lead singer and guitarist, Maryn Jones. Her downbeat lyrics perfectly compliment the fuzzy guitar melodies that blend into a ‘90s post-rock revival soundscape. ‘Sunday Morning’ is bouncier, punchy and gives greater emphasis on the vocals of Jones. The quiet, reflective moments are perfectly balanced with the upbeat instrumentation.

‘That Kind Of Girl’ and ‘Ophelia’ are two of the album’s heaviest tracks taking influence from early pop punk and they impress. The record perfectly captures the quiet/loud concept which became popular with ‘90s grunge bands including Pixies and Nirvana. Overall, All Dogs have an impressive debut on their hands and while Kicking Every Day hasn’t received a great deal of press attention, it’s a solid and frequently enjoyable listen and will very likely help them to build a fan base in the UK. Expect to hear more of them over the next year. (7/10)
