Showcasing the Best New Music, Curating the Classics

News Round-Up – 1st May, 2018

Kanye West’s new song ‘Lift Yourself’ was dropped by the artist after he had announced via Twitter that new music would be coming soon. Moreover, next to also announcing two new albums coming out on the 1st and 8th of June (the second one in collaboration with Kid Cudi), Kanye has been under extra scrutiny over the last week due to his political revelations. The rapper has vigorously supported the American president Donald Trump, even wearing one of his ‘Make America Great Again’ baseball caps for a selfie which, inevitably, received a rather mixed reaction from the public.

Following his support for President Trump, Kanye released ‘Ye vs. The People,’ a single which features T.I. The song is structured in a form of a dialogue between West, who raps: “I know Obama was Heaven sent, but ever since Trump won, it proved that I could be president,” and T.I. who represent the opposing views: “This s**t is stubborn, selfish, bullheaded, even for you.”

J. Cole announced that he will be launching Dreamville Music Festival this year. The one-day festival will take place in Raleigh at Dorothea Dix Park, North Carolina, on the 15th of September. Cole’s manager Ibrahim ‘Ib’ Hamad commented: “We’ve been trying to put this festival together for a few years now. It’s just hard to come into a city and get the whole city to approve it and get behind you. So it was great that we took our time… and really connected with the city and connected with the mayor.”

J. Cole’s latest album, KOD is available to listen now.

Britpop icons Suede are returning with a new album, which is set for a release on the 21st of September via Warner Music. The album is titled The Blue Hour and was produced by Adam Moulder. The band related to the album’s title by saying: “‘The Blue Hour’ is the time of day when the light is fading and night is closing in,” while Suede’s frontman Brett Anderson added: “This is a very complicated record, much more so than the last two – and more diverse. It’s quite a journey. There are a lot of elements that we haven’t used before, like a choir and more spoken word and dialogue.”

Suede’s last record, Night Thoughts, was released in 2016.
